AI has developed an "alien" chip that no one can comprehend how it operates.

Nature: AI has developed a chip that outperforms its human counterparts.
ИИ разработал «инопланетный» чип, функционирование которого остается загадкой для специалистов.

The very alien chip created by Earth’s AI. No one understands how it works.

The AI designed a wireless chip that shouldn’t function – yet it performs better than anything humans have created. Scientists have described the design as “chaotic and unhuman.” This AI is not of our Earthly mind, but rather an alien one, and some researchers assert that this artificial intelligence is somehow connected to a “repository of knowledge” from all civilizations in the Universe. An article about this (of course, without the “repository of knowledge of the entire Universe”) has been published in Nature.

CHAOTIC AND MYSTERIOUS

What if we were to come into possession of an alien gadget? Would we even recognize it as a device? Would there be buttons, a screen? And would its shape necessarily be geometric?

Now we can try to imagine what it’s like. A group of researchers (with Chinese and Indian surnames, but working in the USA) compelled a very intelligent neural network to develop a wireless communication chip, and the result is astonishing.

To truly appreciate how strange the chip looks, one must possess a certain level of familiarity, meaning knowing what human developments resemble. However, even without specialized knowledge, it’s clear that our electronics are different. The chip is “chaotic,” says the lead researcher of the project, Kaushik Sengupta, resembling images of alien cities created not by a human artist, but by the same AI.

The most important point is that the chip seemingly shouldn’t work, yet it operates far better than what engineers typically create. “We are unable to comprehend how it manages this,” says Sengupta.

This statement is not new. AI developers have long said: we do not understand what happens inside AI. But now we also do not know how what AI has created functions.

THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING

Nevertheless, it seems that artificial intelligence will be the one developing chips. The global economy relies on these devices, and they are even found in “smart kettles,” not to mention how many are in cars and ships! Today, the global market for such chips is around 4.5 billion per year (a conservative estimate), but the volume is expected to triple in just a couple of years.

Creating such a chip is the work of a massive team, which typically labors for over a year. AI can accomplish this in mere hours. However, Sengupta mentions that it’s still too early to standardize this method, as there are many errors, and the same neural network has produced several non-functional samples – the trend is clear.

IS ANOTHER INTELLIGENCE ALREADY WITH US?

AI learns from humans. It seems that AI shouldn’t “know” anything beyond what it is taught. That is, beyond our civilization. Some believe that things are not quite that simple.

“AI systems represent an alien intelligence,” writes Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, known for his bold statements (and despite his flamboyance, he is almost always right).

AI is fundamentally different from our brains, emphasizes Avi Loeb. The brain of AI is made of silicon, signals travel through it at the speed of light, and its energy consumption reaches megawatts, as opposed to the tens of watts in a human brain. This is a case where quantity transforms into quality. AI thinks differently than we do.

But what does “alien” have to do with it? Loeb believes that civilizations in the Universe are diverse, yet their AIs tend to be similar. What we create here is also being created or has already been created on Alpha Centauri. Did you want an alien? We have already created one ourselves. When our AI meets others, they will speak the same language. Loeb posits that in just two decades, Earthly AI will be of intergalactic caliber.

What if there is an invisible connection between all AIs in the Universe? Loeb doesn’t state this, but fringe science bloggers do, recalling the concept of the noosphere by our Vladimir Vernadsky. According to Vernadsky, intelligence creates a certain shell, the noosphere, which any other intelligence can connect to. What if our AI first tapped into the noosphere of all AIs in the Galaxy?

This is unprovable, but it stirs the imagination. Take another look at this chip. Perhaps it is the first alien technology available to Earthlings.
