Russian journalist Alexey Shevchenko discussed how the leadership of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) views the anti-records of "Barys" this season, as reported by Caravan.kz.
Fans both in Kazakhstan and abroad continue to be "astonished" by the significant losses of "Barys" from Astana. Since the beginning of 2025, the capital team has played 9 matches, winning only one — on January 26 in Astana, they defeated "Sibir" in overtime. Out of 8 losses, 3 have been heavy defeats. Currently, "Barys" holds the last position in the "East" conference with no chance of making the playoffs.
In his column for "Sport-Express," journalist Alexey Shevchenko raised the question: "Why does the KHL need a team like 'Barys'?" Listing all the facts, including the roster cleanout and management changes mid-season, Shevchenko shared some insider information. It turns out he was curious about the opinions of KHL officials regarding the feasibility of "Barys" remaining in this Russian league.
“I asked the KHL if they were concerned that the club from Kazakhstan had changed significantly, including strategically. The league responded that they had contacted the club from Astana about this matter, and they supposedly assured them that they would continue normal operations. It turns out they were deceived,” the journalist writes.
At the same time, Shevchenko notes that the option of "Barys" exiting the KHL would severely damage the league's image as an international entity, leaving it with only one team from Belarus and "Kunlun," which, although it formally represents China, is based in Mytishchi.
