The figure skating competition for women in singles took place in Harbin, China. The Kazakhstan team came close to winning a medal but ultimately left empty-handed, reports Caravan.kz.
Two athletes represented Kazakhstan in the women's events — local talent Sofia Farafonova and former Russian skater Sofia Samodelkina.
Farafonova finished in 10th place with a total of 125.27 points, while Samodelkina narrowly missed out on a medal, securing 4th place with a total of 188.43 points. She was just 20 points shy of the bronze medal.
It’s worth noting that for her free program, Samodelkina chose a song performed by the People's Artist of Kazakhstan, Dimash Kudaibergen — Ave Maria and Stranger. However, neither the music nor the image created by Sofia convinced the judges that she deserved a medal.
“I really love how Dimash sings; I have never heard anyone sing like that before. I stumbled upon a video on Instagram, I think, where he sings without music, just with his voice, and it almost feels like music is playing, but it’s not there. In general, it impressed me a lot, and I decided that I could combine his powerful music with my strong skating, and it should turn out great. I think it turned out really well and successfully,” said Sofia Samodelkina in an interview with Qazsport after her performance.
Earlier, we reported that Samodelkina trains in the USA with the world-renowned American specialist Rafael Arutyunyan.
