As reported by the Almaty Regional Court, in January 2022, 44 victims, including citizens of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan, were placed in a special reception center of the police department.
"The defendants, utilizing their official powers, committed actions that violated the law, as a result of which the victims were subjected to torture," the statement reads.
The guilt of the defendants was established through witness testimonies, expert conclusions, and other evidence that was confirmed and examined in court.
"By the court's verdict, six police officers were found guilty of committing a crime under part 1 of article 146 (as amended until March 17, 2023) and part 1 of article 362 of the Criminal Code, and according to part 2 of article 58 of the Criminal Code, a collective punishment of three years of imprisonment was imposed on each." All convicted individuals are barred from holding positions in public service, as well as from having special ranks.
The verdict has not yet entered into legal force.
Previously, in the summer of 2024, 33 officials were held accountable for torture.
