On the night of January 27 to 28, Archbishop Serapion of Kokshetau and Akmolinsk died in a car accident. He was the ruling hierarch of the Kokshetau Diocese of the Metropolitan District of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The tragedy occurred in the Nizhny Novgorod region on the M12 highway, near the village of Pilna. The vehicle in which the hierarch was traveling from Kokshetau to Moscow for the Christmas readings crashed. A clergyman from the Resurrection Cathedral in Kokshetau, Hieromonk Evlogy (Shcherbak), who was accompanying him, was hospitalized with a concussion.
