By the end of December 2024, prices for meat and meat products in Kazakhstan increased by 3.4% compared to December 2023. The prices for meat and poultry rose by 2.9%, sausages by 5.2%, and meat products by 3.5%. Specifically, poultry prices increased by 6%, beef by 2.6%, pork by 2.4%, and horse and lamb meat by 1.2%. Among sausages, semi-smoked varieties became 6.3% more expensive, while boiled sausages increased by 4.4%. Regionally, the highest annual price growth was noted in Akmolinsk region at 6.5%. This was followed by Atyrau (5.9%) and Aktobe (5.7%) regions. The smallest price increase compared to December of the previous year was recorded in Astana (1.3%), as well as in Ulytau and Abai regions (1.9% in each region), reports energyprom.kz.

When comparing Kazakhstan to other countries, the situation is as follows. As of January 14, 2025, Kazakhstan ranked 12th in the world for the affordability of beef (hindquarters) and 22nd for chicken (fillet). The price of beef in the country was $6.8 per kg, while chicken was priced at $4.5 per kg.

Among the CIS countries, the hindquarter of beef was cheapest in Ukraine*: $6.2 per kg. Next was Russia: $6.7 per kg. In other countries, the situation is as follows: Belarus — $7 per kg, Uzbekistan — $8.1, Azerbaijan — $9.8, Armenia — $11.9.

Chicken fillet was cheaper than in Kazakhstan in Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine. It was more expensive for buyers in Azerbaijan ($4.6 per kg) and Armenia ($7.2).

In the third quarter of 2024, the average consumption of meat and meat products in Kazakhstan was 20.5 kg per capita — 2.9% more than the previous year. Traditionally, beef is the most popular among Kazakhs. Its consumption increased by 4.9%, reaching 6.4 kg per capita. Following beef are lamb (1.5 kg), horse meat (1.4 kg), chicken meat (1.3 kg), and pork (806 g). The consumption of semi-smoked sausages rose by 3.7%, to 997 g per capita. The consumption of boiled sausages remained at last year's level: 681 g on average per person per quarter. Among other meat products, the average consumption of minced meat was 1.9 kg, sausages and wieners — 596 g, beef liver — 202 g, lard — 44 g, and meat semi-finished products — 42 g per capita.

Regionally, in the third quarter of 2024, the highest meat consumption was recorded among residents of the Zhambyl region: 23.6 kg per capita — 6.6% more compared to the same period in 2023. High figures were also noted in Akmolinsk and Zhetysu regions (23.5 kg in each region), Atyrau (22.9 kg), Pavlodar, and Karaganda (22.8 kg on average per person in each region). According to official data, the least amount of meat was consumed by residents of Shymkent: 15 kg per capita for the quarter — 5.1% more than the previous year. Low consumption levels were also recorded in Turkestan (16 kg) and Kyzylorda (16.2 kg per person) regions.

According to worldpopulationreview data, in 2022, among CIS countries, the highest meat consumption was by residents of Russia (11.8 million tons), Ukraine (1.9 million tons), and Uzbekistan (1.5 million tons). The lowest consumption volumes were noted in Armenia: 165 thousand tons. Kazakhstan ranked fourth: 1.4 million tons per year.

However, a more important indicator is meat consumption per capita. Here, Kazakhstan ranked third among CIS and Central Asian countries: in 2022, the country had 70.2 kg of meat per capita. Above Kazakhstan were Belarus (94.5 kg) and Russia (81.7 kg per capita).

Specifically regarding meat products, beef consumption in Kazakhstan amounted to 24.8 kg per person, pork — 8 kg, chicken meat — 21.8 kg, lamb and goat meat — 8.5 kg. Uzbekistan led in beef consumption per capita, Belarus in pork and chicken meat consumption, and Turkmenistan in lamb and goat meat consumption.
