Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly expressed their views on this matter on social media.

"There is not the slightest chance that Canada will become part of the United States. Workers and local communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s largest trading and security partners," wrote Trudeau, who previously announced his resignation.

There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.

In turn, Joly stated that Trump’s comments demonstrate a "complete lack of understanding of what makes Canada a strong country."

"Our economy is strong. Our people are strong. We will never back down in the face of threats," she added.

Recall that the president-elect wrote on the Truth Social platform on January 6 that "if Canada united with the U.S.," both nations would benefit. Earlier, at the end of November, he announced a 25 percent tariff on imports from Canada.

Meanwhile, at a press conference on January 7, one journalist asked Trump if he planned to use military force to annex Canada to the United States.

"No, not economic force. Because Canada and the U.S. – that would really be something. You get rid of this artificially drawn border and see what happens. It would be much better for national security. Don’t forget, we are essentially already protecting Canada," he responded.

Trump added that he has "so many friends there."

"I love the Canadian people, they are wonderful. But we spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year to protect them, to take care of Canada. And due to the trade deficit, we are losing a lot of things. We don’t need their cars. They make 20 percent of our cars, but we don’t need that. I would rather produce them in Detroit. We don’t need these cars, their lumber," Trump continued.

Additionally, according to him, the U.S. does not need Canadian goods.

"We don’t need anything they have. So why are we spending over 200 billion dollars to protect Canada? – Trump said. – We have the right not to help them with their financial troubles. Because we ourselves have 36 trillion dollars (in debt. – Note.)".

The Republican stated that he referred to the Canadian Prime Minister as "Governor Trudeau." He claimed that he threatened the Canadian leader to "stop the subsidies," saying that "we give them a lot of money." According to Trump, the Canadian Prime Minister replied that in that case, Canada would "fall apart."

"They should be a state," Trump concluded.

Earlier, the president-elect of the United States promised enormous benefits to the residents of Greenland if the island became part of the United States.
