As reported by the Telegram channel Akorda, the head of Kazakhstan extended condolences to his French counterpart due to the numerous human casualties caused by the devastating tropical cyclone on the island of Mayotte.
"The head of state expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those affected," the Akorda statement reads.
Recall that on the night of December 14, cyclone "Shido" struck the island of Mayotte, a French overseas territory located in the western Indian Ocean between northern Mozambique and northern Madagascar. The impact resulted in the destruction of entire communities. Wind speeds reached 225 km/h, making it the most powerful storm to hit the islands in over 90 years.
According to authorities, the death toll from the cyclone could reach several hundred or even thousands.
RIA Novosti reports that Macron will travel to Mayotte in the coming days.
According to the publication, it is currently known that the disaster claimed the lives of 21 people, while another 45 individuals are in critical condition, and 1,373 injured are in moderate condition.
Macron also announced that a national mourning will be declared due to the incident.
