On January 31, the appellate court in Aktau delivered a verdict in the case concerning the death of coach Alina Serikova, who died after being tortured for several hours by five men, as reported by Tengrinews.kz, citing the Mangystau Regional Court.

For the first time, the parents of the deceased girl were allowed to attend the sentencing of the five defendants.

The appellate court sentenced the main defendant to life imprisonment. Previously, the first-instance court had sentenced him to 20 years in prison. Another defendant received a 16-year prison sentence, while the others were sentenced to 13 years and 6 months and 13 years, respectively. The first-instance court had initially imposed an 8.5-year prison term on them.

The defendants were jointly ordered to pay material damages amounting to 19,618,415 tenge and moral damages of 30 million tenge to the victim's family.

It should be noted that two previous appellate hearings were canceled: the first due to the absence of a lawyer for one of the defendants, and the second because the defendant refused to have a lawyer.

Earlier, Bauyrzhan Zholzhan provided Tengrinews.kz with photographs from the crime scene and shared his expectations regarding the appellate court.

Alina Serikova committed suicide in May of last year. A few days before the tragedy, she fell victim to a horrific crime. Unknown men, under the influence of methamphetamine, attacked her, kidnapped her, beat her, raped her, and forced her to take out a loan of two million tenge.

The brother of the deceased shared a video with Tengrinews.kz showing the moment of the girl's abduction. The footage reveals several men dragging her to a car while she struggles to escape. Alina fought desperately to break free from her captors, but at one point, a second car arrived, from which a guy exited and helped the others force her into the vehicle. Both cars then drove away.

In December 2024, the rapists faced trial. The prosecutor requested a life sentence for the main defendant and sentences of 15 to 16 years for the other participants. Ultimately, the main defendant received a 20-year prison term, while four of his accomplices were sentenced to between seven and 8.5 years in prison.

The family of the deceased and the prosecutors believed that the rapists received overly lenient sentences. The Mangystau Regional Prosecutor's Office filed an appeal against the court's verdict, insisting on stricter penalties for those responsible for the incident.
