French President Emmanuel Macron is convening an emergency EU summit in response to the recent statements from the US regarding the resolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the "challenges posed by Trump," reports Tengrinews.kz citing Politico.
Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski announced that Emmanuel Macron is inviting European leaders to an emergency summit in Paris on Monday during the Munich Security Conference.
"I am very pleased that President Macron has invited our leaders to Paris," Sikorski said, adding that he expects European leaders to discuss the challenges posed by US President Donald Trump "very seriously."
"President Trump has a method of operation that the Russians call 'testing the waters': you push and see what happens, and then you change your position. ... And we need to respond," the Polish minister stated.
It remains unclear whether all EU leaders will participate in the meeting, or if only a small group of countries will attend, and whether other European leaders, such as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, will be invited, the publication notes.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who was with Sikorski in Munich, neither confirmed nor denied the holding of the emergency summit.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for the establishment of European armed forces, stating that the continent can no longer rely on protection from the United States and will earn Washington's respect only with a strong army.
Previously, Bloomberg reported that senior officials from the US and Russia will meet next week to prepare for a summit between Trump and Putin. Ukrainian representatives may attend the meeting, but the EU will not.
