Two major streets in Astana may become one-way. The issue is currently under discussion. This was announced by the mayor of the capital, Zhenis Kasymbek, as reported by Tengri Auto.

The plan for implementing one-way traffic is being developed for the streets of Akmeshit and Turkestan.

"This is very convenient for the residents of that area (...) When moving, for example, from south to north on Turkestan, traffic on the left side runs along and right-hand traffic is possible towards Bayterek. That's fine. Stops will be made on the right side - where there is residential and commercial development. Akmeshit will be one-way in the opposite direction. We are currently calculating with specialists. This significantly simplifies the transport scheme. If there were structures on the right side, by the Linear Park, then there would be complaints. Given that there is a green zone in the middle, there are no complaints," - Zhenis Kasymbek said at a briefing at the SCC.

In this case, the movement, according to the mayor, will run alongside the buildings. The city leader believes that this practice will be applied in many major cities in Kazakhstan.

Thus, Akmeshit Street will be one-way up to the Botanical Garden, while Turkestan is considered to be one-way starting from Expo. It is expected that this will significantly alleviate the traffic on streets that are currently often congested.

"Additionally, next year we have plans to improve Sauran Street, which runs parallel to Akmeshit. In some places (there will be - ed.) widening, alignment of right turns. We believe this will significantly relieve the situation on Turkestan. Furthermore, on the other side, beyond Mangilik El, according to the project next year we will widen Alikhan Bokeikhan Street by two lanes. There will be significant widening to two lanes, and part of the traffic will also shift in that direction," - added Kasymbek.

The final decision is expected to be made in the spring of 2025. If it is positive, the parallel one-way traffic on Turkestan and Akmeshit will be implemented before the start of the school year.

Earlier, Zhenis Kasymbek shared how they plan to tackle the issue of traffic jams on the roads of Astana.
