On December 20, snow fell all day in Almaty – from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. According to the city administration, by 9:30 PM, the city had received 12 centimeters of snow, while the mountainous areas saw 18 centimeters, as reported by Tengrinews.kz.
With the onset of snowfall in the mountainous and foothill regions, and later across the entire city, anti-icing treatment of the roads began. More than two thousand tons of materials were used for this purpose.
"The first phase was completed by 4:30 PM. After sunset, the temperature dropped sharply from 0 to -4 degrees, which, combined with the heavy snowfall, led to the formation of ice. A second treatment was carried out starting at 5:30 PM. From 10:00 PM, snow removal began on the roadways with the application of anti-icing agents. All operations are being conducted continuously to ensure safe movement throughout the city," the city administration reported.
City workers plan to continue snow removal efforts tonight. For this, 21 columns of equipment will be dispatched to the streets.
Since December 16, a total of 46 thousand cubic meters of snow have been removed from Almaty. During the day, 1,034 road workers were active on the streets, with 957 working at night.
"To address the consequences of the snowfall, 603 units of special equipment have been deployed, including 130 sand spreaders; and 70 units of small-scale equipment for clearing sidewalks, parking areas, bus stops, and overpasses," the city administration clarified.
The city authorities have urged residents and visitors of Almaty to exercise caution on the roads and to take weather conditions into account.
As a reminder, today the main Christmas tree was lit in Almaty.
