In 2025, the holy month of Ramadan (Ramazan) will commence on March 1 and continue until March 29. In this regard, the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kazakhstan (DUMK) has released a fasting calendar for various cities. The complete schedule can be found in the Tengri Life article.
What is the religious significance of Ramadan?
Ramadan is a month of fasting and prayer in Islam that holds profound religious meaning for Muslims. In the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is the ninth month during which Muslims worldwide observe fasting from dawn until sunset. Therefore, each city has its own fasting schedule. It is believed that a complete abstention from basic human needs, and especially from excesses during fasting, allows Muslims to affirm the strength of their faith, learn self-control, and promotes spiritual purification.
When does Ramadan begin and end?
Ramadan lasts for 29 or 30 days, with its duration dictated by the Islamic calendar, which is used to determine the dates of religious holidays. In some Muslim countries, it also serves as the official calendar.
The Muslim calendar is lunar, depending solely on the visible phases of the Moon. Ramadan concludes with the holiday of Uraza Bayram (Orazа Ait), also known as the Festival of Breaking the Fast or Eid al-Fitr.
This year, the fast will last for 29 days and will conclude on March 29. Orazа Ait will begin on March 30. The night of March 26 to 27 is the sacred Night of Qadr (Laylat al-Qadr).
Who is exempt from fasting during Ramadan?
Throughout the entire period of Ramadan, a strict fast (Orazа) is observed, which involves refraining from water, food, and intimate relations from the onset of the morning prayer until the evening. Exemptions from fasting during Ramadan include pregnant and breastfeeding women, children under seven years old, as well as elderly individuals who are unfit for fasting due to advanced age and poor health, those suffering from chronic diseases generally without hope for recovery, and individuals for whom fasting could pose a significant health risk.
During the fasting period, traditional meals are replaced with suhoor - the pre-dawn meal, and iftar (auyizashar) - the evening meal after sunset.
Previously, the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan commented on whether children can observe fasting.
How do Muslims determine the daily start and end of the fast?
The fast begins early in the morning, approximately two hours before dawn, and ends in the evening after sunset.
