U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his administration is already engaged in "very serious" negotiations with Moscow regarding the war in Ukraine, and that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin may soon take "significant" actions to end the nearly three-year conflict. Trump made this statement during a briefing at the White House on January 31, as reported by Tengrinews.kz, citing DW.

"We will talk, and I think we may do something significant. Everything I can do to stop the war, I will do. We want to end this war. This war wouldn't have started if I were president," the U.S. president told reporters in the Oval Office.

At the same time, Trump avoided answering a question from journalists about whether he had communicated with Putin informally. "I don't want to talk about it," said the American president.

The day before, during a similar press briefing, Trump hinted at an already conducted conversation with Putin.

Reports of Trump potentially holding informal talks with the Kremlin leader have been circulating since his victory in the U.S. presidential election in November 2024. The Kremlin denies such claims. However, in recent months, Putin has repeatedly praised Trump, and at the end of January, he stated that the best format for resuming dialogue between Russia and the U.S. would be a personal meeting with the American leader. At the same time, Putin rejected the idea of signing any agreements with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
