As if confirming the ongoing crisis in the middleweight division of professional boxing, the champion of two versions in this category, Kazakhstan's Janibek Alimkhanuly, has challenged a decorated fighter from a heavier weight class, reports Caravan.kz.
After numerous unsuccessful attempts by Alimkhanuly to initiate a unification bout with Carlos Adames and Erislandy Lara, discussions about a crisis in middleweight began to circulate within the global boxing community. Janibek, having insight into the situation, could either validate or refute these claims, but he does not comment on the circumstances directly. Instead, the Kazakh fighter prefers to issue challenges to the top boxers from other weight classes. For instance, Alimkhanuly has already reached out to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, who currently competes in the super middleweight division.
Last weekend, Janibek Alimkhanuly's challenge was received by the interim world champion in the light heavyweight division, David Benavidez. Notably, both Janibek and David are undefeated professional boxers.
“If Benavidez agrees to fight me, you know I’m always ready! It will be an exciting showdown! He’s a strong boxer, and when two of the best meet in the ring, fans get a true spectacle! Boxing isn’t business; it’s sport!” Alimkhanuly wrote on his social media.
