The decision to include the soup was made by the intergovernmental committee for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage during its 19th session. This was reported on December 4 on the website of the Thai government, citing Culture Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol.
She emphasized that “Tom Yum Kung” embodies the lifestyle of the Thai people, serving as one of the key elements of Thailand's soft power, known as the “Land of Smiles.” This soup has long been a gastronomic symbol of the country, which has led to its active promotion on the international stage.
The inclusion of the dish in the UNESCO list confirms its cultural significance and contributes to the preservation of Thai culinary traditions.
