Folk artisans pass down the knowledge of crafting a whip from generation to generation.
A resident of the Janarkinsky district in the Ulytau region, Meirkhan Igenov is one of these rare specialists. A relative taught him how to make a whip, wishing to transmit the knowledge of their ancestors to the new generation. Young Meirkhan listened attentively to the lessons and tried to remember all the instructions and advice from the master, and today, years later, he continues the family tradition.
For a Kazakh, the whip symbolizes not only the skill of horseback riding but also the cultural identity of the Kazakh people. Identifying oneself with the spirits of ancestors who led a nomadic lifestyle is a unique philosophy for horse riding enthusiasts and collectors of ancient artifacts. The whip is one such artifact that has reached us in its original form. Today, the whip serves as a bridge from the past to the present, making its value even more significant.
-Working with leather is a meticulous craft; it requires precise hand movements, good eye coordination, and a creative perspective. Each piece is uniquely designed and unlike any other. The creative process captivates you so much that you completely immerse yourself in your beloved work, pouring your soul into it. Ideas naturally form new outlines for the future product in your mind. Here, you need to choose the color, texture of the leather, and the ornamentation. Typically, it takes me about 5 to 7 days to create one item. There’s a special feeling when you realize that the whip will faithfully serve its new owner. Essentially, this is a very ancient craft that dates back to the time of Genghis Khan, and I hope that interest in it does not fade over the years. Today, in an era of total digitalization, many people wish to hold something that has warmth and is made by people for people. Everyone who has ever held handmade items feels a unique warmth emanating from them, and do you know why? Because each piece contains not only the artisan's labor but also a part of their soul and creative energy, - reveals the master, offering a glimpse into the creative backstage.
Today, the geography of orders for Meirkhan Igenov's products has extended far beyond Kazakhstan's borders. Buyers from near and far abroad are eager to acquire this traditional attribute of the Kazakh people, which has survived through the ages, to preserve it within their families and pass it down as a valuable relic from generation to generation.
This year, Meirkhan Igenov participated in the regional competition "One Village - One Product" and, according to the brand committee's meeting results, he ranked among the top three, securing an honorable second place in the Ulytau region.
Additionally, Meirkhan Akmashovich took part in the finals of the republican exhibition "One Village - One Product" in Astana. There in the capital, he shared good news - his handmade whip made from natural leather has made it into the top ten best products of the Republic of Kazakhstan and will participate in the Small and Medium Business Forum “Adal Azamat. Adal Enbek. Adal Business,” organized by NPP “Atameken” on November 8 this year.
-I express my gratitude to the Chamber of Entrepreneurs of the Ulytau region for their support and promotion of my products. This means a lot to me. This is not just a hobby - it is about preserving the traditions and customs of the Kazakh people. To maintain the continuity of generations, I also conduct master classes and pass on accumulated experiences to the youth. In an era of global computerization, it is crucial to know and remember one's roots. Thus, the traditions of our ancestors will continue with the younger generation of Kazakhstanis,- emphasizes the finalist of the OSOP.
